u₁ u₂ ... u_n   tupla dei simboli, o vt formali

a₁ a₂ ... a_n   tupla del coefficienti, scalari di un campo K

u₁ u₂ ... u_n   and “+” are symbols that do not mean anything by themselves except that they can appear in such linear combinations and have familiar properties of algebraic objects (the operation “+” is commutative and associative, etc.).

Such formal constructions are often encountered in mathematics.
